"Don't believe the horror stories!"
We had read all the horror stories about the Jadrolinija ferry from Bari to Dubrovnik on various forums and were a bit scared. Luckily, all stories proved to be incorrect. We took our car on the ferry and had booked 2 seaview outside cabins for a total of 4 persons.
You need to be at the ticket office at "Varco della Vittoria, Porto di Bari" well in advance, i.e. before 8pm for the 10pm departure. Better to be earlier, ticket office opens at 5pm. Ticketing and embarkment are very well organized. Personel speaks enough words of English to explain procedures. You park your car in the designated "Croatia" area, collect your tickets and wait (and wait some more). There are two simple restaurants, toilets and simple shops on the parking lot. At 20:00 pm all cars start driving towards the embarkment area 2 km further. Embarkment is clear, swift and smooth, including passport control.
Once on board, you take the elevator to the reception at 5th floor, get your cabin keys and your done. Cabins are on 6th and 7th floor and can be reached by elevator as well. Our cabins were spacious (we booked a 4p cabin for two people), airco ditioned, and with good and clean beds and a decent bath room with hot shower.
Trip was smooth and nice (in spite of stormy night with rain and thunder the ship was very stable) and we arrived well in time. Breakfast is said to be from 6:30 until 8:00, but better be early to find the buffet fully stocked.
In short: don't expect a cruise ship, but don't believe any of the horror stories that you find on the forums. This is an excellent, comfortable, safe and clean way of travelling between Italy and Croatia, especially if you want to bring your car.
